Arbourthorne Primary received a YGT Grounds Development Award in March 2026 to develop an underused strip of grass (see Before photo below) into a herb and vegetable garden. The seasonal produce to be used by their Flourish community kitchen group, and the children to be involved in every stage. The school were able to buy the planters, compost and planting for their 'Tomato Soup bed' and another veg growing bed. The project inspired another member of staff to renovate the rest of the space with flower planting and a welcoming area with two seating areas.
The school reported that 'We are patiently waiting for the produce to grow so it can be harvested and enjoyed, although the herbs are already in use. We are growing lemon grass for the first time which is exciting! I hope you agree we have made the best use of the money and it will give pleasure and produce for many years.'
The school is also planning a Horticultural Show in September, to which a member of YGT Schools team has been invited!
