Baldersby Park, formerly known as Newby Park, has been shaped by its owners over 200 years to reflect their desire to provide a suitable setting for the main house, an early Palladian mansion built between 1718 and 1730 for Sir William Robinson. The nurserymen, London & Wise provided plants for the early gardens and parkland and London may have advised on the design. In the 1780s, Lord Grantham engaged the landscape designer, Adam Mickle II, to carry out his plans to update the layout. A later owner, George Hudson, used the services of Joseph Paxton between in the late 1840s principally for the walled kitchen garden.
